Why should I become a referee?
There are so many reasons to become a referee. Here are a few:
· Earn money and work flexible hours
· Be physically active and get fit
· Be involved in basketball (especially if you love the game)
· Gain a better understanding of basketball and its rules
· Meet new people, make new friends and share many great experiences
· Improve your life skills (e.g. communication, independence, confidence, decision making and awareness)
How much of my time will it involve?
This is dependent entirely on you.
Trainees are required to attend 4 theory sessions on a Sunday and referee at least one day per week for an entire term.
Accredited referees can choose a permanent position on any roster or a casual / fill-in referee on any shift. Shifts run every day of the week. There is a maximum of 3 week day shifts and 1 Saturday shift per week.
What is the minimum age for a referee at Nunawading?
Any new children wishing to be a referee, must be 14 years of age when the first theory session starts of each school. This is largely due to data which shows children are more likely to succeed and enjoy refereeing when they are older rather than younger.
How much does a referee get paid?
It varies on the grade of the referee. Payments range from approximately $12 to $18 per game on Nunawading domestic competitions.
How will I improve as a referee?
All referees are coached and observed regularly by a team of Shift Supervisors, the Referee Adviser, referee coaches and senior referees who all provide feedback and solutions to areas for improvement. This is coupled with experience you gain each week by being faced with challenges that you learn to overcome. With this experience and knowledge come better opportunities to referee higher quality games and be paid at a higher rate.
