long standing partnership continues to underpin the Nunawading Spectres Men, with the pair guiding the group to a perfect start to the NBL1 South 2026 season following back to back wins in Tasmania.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"235\" data-end=\"517\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The Spectres opened their campaign with a 99\u201367 win over Hobart Chargers before defeating Northern Force 98\u201382, but beyond the early results, the foundation of the program remains deeply rooted in connection, none more significant than the relationship between Flynn and Antoniadou.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"629\" data-end=\"875\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The pair first began working together in 2011 at Dandenong, where Flynn coached Antoniadou at Under 18s VJBL, recalling her as a \u201ctenacious young defender\u201d and \u201cthe hardest worker in the room,\u201d a foundation that quickly built into something more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"722\" data-end=\"871\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cShe became an extension of me as a coach on the floor and it\u2019s just sort of blossomed from there,\u201d Flynn said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"873\" data-end=\"1101\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cI feel incredibly blessed that we have this relationship that\u2019s been able to last such a significant amount of time\u2026 that sort of longevity in a player coach relationship is rare,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1103\" data-end=\"1250\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cNothing\u2019s ever guaranteed in coaching\u2026 but to have something like this for 15 years, I feel very fortunate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1252\" data-end=\"1379\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cShe\u2019s very much an extension of my family\u2026 I\u2019ll go into battle with her any day of the week, and I know the feeling\u2019s mutual.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"39\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">For Antoniadou, it all shifted in 2018 after stepping away from playing basketball, when Flynn picked up the phone and challenged that decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"145\" data-end=\"266\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cI hear you\u2019re not playing\u2026 we can\u2019t have that\u2026 why don\u2019t you come down to Nunawading and see how you like it,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"313\" data-end=\"363\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cI went for one session and I haven\u2019t left since.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"313\" data-end=\"363\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">What started as a simple return quickly became something much more, with the connection extending well beyond basketball.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2001\" data-end=\"2039\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cFlynny is like family now,\u201d she said. \u201cthe club and Flynny especially, they care about you more as a person first and player comes second and third.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2155\" data-end=\"2341\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cI keep coming back because Nunawading feels like home\u2026 I love the people in it, I love the community, and I stay for the culture,\u201d Antoniadou said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2343\" data-end=\"2507\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cBasketball aside, the club cares about you more as a person first\u2026 if you need someone in your corner, they\u2019re always there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2343\" data-end=\"2507\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" helvetica, sans-serif;\">That sense of belonging extends beyond the playing group, shaping the broader identity of Nunawading as a club built on relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2468\" data-end=\"2597\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cMy family is a big extension at Nunawading now\u2026 they just get pulled in,\u201d Antoniadou said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2599\" data-end=\"2719\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Flynn echoed that sentiment, highlighting the club\u2019s deliberate focus on connection in a competitive league environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2721\" data-end=\"2915\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cIt\u2019s relationship based for us and they\u2019ve got to be authentic and genuine\u2026 every player on our roster has a connection somewhere along the line,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cThat extends beyond the players\u2026 from staff to the people who sweep the floors, everyone is part of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3024\" data-end=\"3159\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cOur motto is we have serious fun. We know when to be serious, but we enjoy doing it,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cWe can be really serious and then we can be absolutely not so serious\u2026 that\u2019s what makes it enjoyable to keep coming back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3327\" data-end=\"3447\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">That connection has also evolved alongside Flynn\u2019s coaching style, with Antoniadou noting a shift in approach over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3449\" data-end=\"3627\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cIt\u2019s definitely gotten more creative\u2026 it\u2019s about understanding what the defence is giving you and finding ways to get an edge,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3629\" data-end=\"3837\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cIt\u2019s fun because sometimes he\u2019ll coach to beat an opposition player or coach\u2026 as I\u2019ve gotten older, you start to see who he\u2019s trying to work and get the edge against.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3839\" data-end=\"4004\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">With a strong Round 1 setting the tone, that long standing partnership remains central as Nunawading continues to integrate new faces while maintaining its identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em>Nunawading Spectres now turn their attention to Tuesday night, where they face Ringwood Hawks at Norwood Secondary College as part one of the GEBC Cup series.
