Nunawading Basketball welcomes today’s announcement from the Albanese Government committing $45 million towards the redevelopment of the Nunawading Indoor Sports Centre, should it be re-elected.

This significant commitment acknowledges the vital role the facility plays in delivering sporting opportunities across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs and the importance of investing in community sport infrastructure to support growing demand.

The proposed investment will go towards a complete redevelopment of the existing facility – transforming the 55-year-old venue into a modern, regional indoor sports hub catering to basketball, netball, volleyball, badminton, adaptive sports, and a range of community programs.

The redevelopment will also support elite athlete development and training, in partnership with programs such as SEDA College and Special Olympics.

Nunawading Basketball is proud to serve over 12,000 members and deliver more than 20,000 games annually – contributing to over one million visits each year. With the Centre currently at capacity, this commitment represents a crucial step towards realising the vision of a facility that can meet the needs of the local community now and into the future.

Today’s announcement builds on the $35 million already committed by Whitehorse City Council, and has been made possible through the ongoing support and advocacy of our stakeholders and broader sporting community.

President Nunawading Basketball, Robert Green said:

“We thank the Minister, Member for Chisholm and Whitehorse City Council for this amazing announcement.  I would also like to pay tribute to our volunteers, members and participants who have supported us in our advocacy over many years.  This project will provide a legacy for our community and region for generations to come. We look forward to working with all key stakeholders to bring it fruition”.

Federal Member for Ballarat Catherine King MP said:
“Labor is delivering this critical boost to support the growing community of Melbourne’s east with vital sporting facilities. From the thousands of basketball games, volleyball matches or badminton tournaments, we know how essential the redeveloped Nunawading Indoor Sports Centre will be for community connection, health and wellbeing.”

Federal Member for Chisholm Carina Garland MP added:
“Anyone who plays basketball in the eastern or southeastern suburbs of Melbourne has played at Nunawading Basketball Stadium. It is an iconic location for people in our community. This much needed injection of funding is hugely important to current and future generations in our community.”

Federal Candidate for Menzies Gabriel Ng noted:
“I met with Nunawading Basketball earlier this year and know that thousands of people use this stadium. This funding commitment will allow more members of my community to get involved not just in the booming sport of basketball, but also increase participation in volleyball, netball and other sports.”

Federal Candidate for Deakin Matt Gregg said:
“This investment is a game-changer for our community’s sports infrastructure. It will slash waiting lists, boost participation across multiple sports, and foster stronger community ties and better physical health.”

Whitehorse City Council, Mayor, Andrew Davenport said:

“This project is of national significance and the benefits of upgrading this facility go far beyond municipal boundaries, Nunawading is the home of one of the largest basketball associations in Australia and has reached maximum capacity with potential players sitting on waiting lists.  That is why this project is a top priority for the Council and we’ve committed $35 million.”

Nunawading Basketball remains committed to working with all levels of government, both sides of Parliament and stakeholders to ensure this project is realised for the benefit of the entire community.
