MELBOURNE – The Nunawading Spectres have signed head coach Paul Flynn to an extension to include the upcoming 2021 NBL1 season, the program announced today.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m excited with the opportunity to continue to lead this program,\u201d Flynn said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost would agree that it has been a challenging year, so to be in a position to talk basketball again and plan for the upcoming NBL1 season is exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n
Originally named to the position ahead of the 2018 season, Flynn guided his Spectres\u2019 to the then South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) Preliminary Final, a result then repeated in the inaugural NBL1 season.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlaying finals basketball is always part of the plan, we\u2019ve been close but not close enough the past couple of seasons – our goal remains as always to win the championship. We\u2019re fortunate that a number of our core players were able to compete in the recent WNBL hub season in North Queensland, so hoping that provides us a leg up to start our preparations.\u201d<\/p>\n
An integral member of the Melbourne Boomers coaching staff, Flynn has been working alongside Guy Molloy as an assistant since the 2017\/2018 WNBL season. The Boomers featuring in the post season in all 4-seasons. Had the 2020 NBL1 season proceeded, several Boomers players were expected to feature for Nunawading.<\/p>\n
Whilst their playing roster is yet to be confirmed for the upcoming NBL1 season, the Spectres have been completing modified on court sessions since mid-January, with the program focussed on an anticipated April start.<\/p>\n
“We have an exciting group of young players that have joined the squad this year from our Victorian Youth Championship team. They’ve brought a lot of enthusiasm into our preliminary sessions and I’m looking forward to their continued development over the course of this year and providing them an opportunity to train with and compete against elite level athletes.”<\/p>\n
