He added to Nunawading’s trophy cabinet claiming the SEABL East Conference Championship in 2014, then the inaugural NBL1 Championship in 2019 capping an impressive run in which the Spectres only missed the post-season once.

Biwer announced via Instagram Tuesday that he would not be returning as coach. The move comes following a year that has seen little to no basketball due to the Covid-19 pandemic and pressed pause on the Spectres title defense.

“Dave has been an incredible coach and leader for our program,” Nunawading Basketball Operations Manager Paul Flynn said.

“I appreciate the opportunity we have shared as a program having had Dave at the helm since 2011. He brought authenticity into a competitive environment, empowering everyone to play their role at an elite level that led to them achieving some great success. I am extremely grateful for his contributions to Nunawading Basketball as a whole, not just the men’s program and know that he will continue to succeed in all that follows.”

Biwer first arrived at Nunawading in 2004 as a player before taking the reins of the program in 2011. He is the longest serving head coach for the Spectres CBA / SEABL / NBL1 men and was inducted into the Nunawading Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015.

“It’s been an incredible journey and I’m thankful to Nunawading for providing me the opportunity to come in and coach at this level,” Biwer said.

“When I took the job, my aim was to make it a winning program and somewhere where high character talent wanted to play. I feel like I was able to help accomplish that.”

“The Spectres are a great club with great people throughout. We worked hard but it never felt like work when you got to battle alongside Macca, Simon and all my guys.
