MELBOURNE – The Nunawading Spectres have announced today that the club has signed Melbourne Boomers representative and New Zealand international Penina Davidson.

Davidson joins the Spectres on the back of three-seasons in the WNBL, first with the Adelaide Lightning then the Melbourne Boomers, playing alongside a number of her now Nunawading teammates in the recent WNBL Hub season.

“I trained with the girls last year between (WNBL) seasons and have wanted to play with them ever since,” Davidson said.

“I love the Melbourne lifestyle, so when the opportunity to stay and play in the NBL1 competition with this group of girls presented itself, I jumped at it.”

“I can’t wait to play for FlynnDog (Spectres Head Coach Paul Flynn), we’ve built a really strong connection over the past couple of years at Boomers and I’m looking forward to working with him more now at Nunawading.”

Davidson has been a staple of the Tall Ferns (New Zealand National Team) program since 2013, making her senior international debut as a teenager. A four-year graduate at the University of California, Berkeley in the NCAA’s Pac-12 power conference, Davidson started all 32 games in her senior year, returning 7.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game whilst playing against Spectres’ representatives Louise Brown (@ Washington State) and Alanna Smith (@ Stanford).

“We’re really excited to be adding Penina into our group for the upcoming NBL1 season,” Spectres Head Coach Paul Flynn said.

“As Penina already spoke to, we have developed a strong relationship working together at WNBL level, she’s played and trained with a number of the athletes we’ve announced as Spectres for the coming season; there’s good synergy already in place and we’re excited to build on that.”

“Whilst she has vast experience at both domestic and international level, Penina has a genuine desire to further develop her game and we’re excited to play a role in helping her achieve that.”

The Spectres tip off their NBL1 campaign April 17 on the road to Frankston and will have to wait until Round 2 to open at home against the Sandringham Sabres.  View the full season schedule here.
