It was a big weekend of hoops as the Nunawading Spectres returned to the hardwood for the first time in 2022, taking part in the annual Eltham Dandenong junior Basketball Tournament.

All bar two of the Spectres U12-U20 teams took part in the event, using the series of games as a re-introduction to competitive basketball ahead of the Victorian Junior Basketball League’s Grading Phase 2.

“The tournament provided our teams with a fantastic opportunity to get back on court and re-introduce ourselves to a competitive environment,” Nunawading Basketball Operation Manager and Chair, Representative Program Paul Flynn said.

“It was a fast start to Grading Phase 1, so this tournament gave our teams an avenue to gain valuable experience in live play without the pressure of results. There has been so much basketball lost these past two years, so to see everyone on court and enjoying their basketball is wonderful.”

For many of our U12 players, the event was their first experience of tournament basketball, with limited opportunities given the Covid-19 pandemic and Victorian lockdowns.

As a program, the Spectres performed exceptionally well across the weekend, with 22 teams making it through to their divisions Final 4, 10 playing off in a Grand Final and 5 taking home the win.

The Spectres now focus their attention on the upcoming VJBL Grading Phase 2 commencing this Friday.
