Spectres Short in Season Opener, Set Sights on Cobras

The Nunawading Spectres tipped off their 2025 NBL1 South campaign on the road Saturday night, facing the Waverley Falcons in a tough doubleheader. Despite spirited efforts from both squads, the Spectres were unable to come away with wins, falling short in both the women’s and men’s contests.

Women’s Game: Waverley 84 def. Nunawading 63
The Spectres women’s team fought hard but couldn’t overcome Waverley’s offensive efficiency, going down 63-84 in the season opener.

Rachel Brewster led the charge for Nunawading, delivering a strong performance with 18 points and seven rebounds. Rachel Antoniadou was instrumental in facilitating the offense, finishing with nine points, seven assists, and five rebounds, while Kate Tanner added eight points, three boards, and two assists.

Despite their efforts, the Spectres struggled to contain Waverley’s offensive firepower, with the Falcons capitalizing on their home-court advantage to pull away in the second half.

Men’s Game: Waverley 98 def. Nunawading 83
In the men’s game, the Spectres started strong but ultimately fell 83-98 to a sharp-shooting Waverley outfit.

BJ Mack II put up a team-high 19 points along with four assists in his Nunawading debut. Christian D’Angelo and Cameron Cranston chipped in with 15 points each, while Jack Gandolfo contributed 13 points. Daniel Baxter provided a well-rounded performance with eight points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

Despite flashes of offensive brilliance, the Spectres were unable to slow Waverley’s scoring runs, particularly in the latter stages of the game.

Next Up: Round 2 Showdown with Kilsyth
The Spectres remain on the road for Round 2, facing a familiar foe in the Kilsyth Cobras this Sunday. The women’s game tips off at 12:00pm, followed by the men at 2:00pm.

Nunawading will be eager to bounce back and claim their first wins of the 2025 campaign in what is always a heated rivalry clash.
