VJBL 2026 Competition Restructure – What It Means

The Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) has confirmed a restructure to its competition framework for the 2025/2026 season.

The key change is the introduction of the Regional League (RL), replacing the Regional Development League (RDL) that was trialed in 2025, and inserting into the broader VJBL competition structure.

What is the Regional League?

The Regional League now sits as the third tier of competition, beneath Victorian Championship (VC) and Victorian Junior League (VJL).

  • U12: Teams will grade into VC, VJL1–5, or Regional League.

  • U14: Teams will grade into VC, VJL1-8, or Regional League
  • U16 & U18: Teams will grade into VC, VJL1+

  • RL competitions will be organised into geographical pools, meaning travel will be reduced compared to higher divisions.

This restructure provides more appropriate competition levels across the state, while supporting families with manageable travel commitments.

What This Means for the Spectres

The restructure allows us to provide more appropriate opportunities for players to represent Nunawading in 2025/2026 – as the previous RDL pilot did not feature a grading phase, whereas Regional League will.

In addition, our Development Squad (U10) will continue for triple-bottom-age U12 athletes (players born 2018), featuring 2 tournaments and 3x 5-week training blocks throughout the year.

Looking Ahead

The introduction of the Regional League is an exciting development for junior basketball in Victoria. For the Spectres, it means more appropriate pathways for players, more teams competing at the right level, and more opportunities to represent one of Australia’s most successful associations.

We encourage all interested players and families to register early, review the Tryout Guidelines and Player & Parent Handbook, and be ready to hit the floor in September.
