SPECTRES CONTINUE TO RISE

We miss basketball…

That’s the sentiment for much of the Nunawading and wider basketball community right now – we don’t even take this long away from the game over the Christmas / New Year period. But whilst the association works hard alongside our peak sporting bodies and the government to generate the plan for a return to sport, internally our MEBA clubs and junior representative programs are delivering sensational content and programs to keep our community moving forward.

One of these programs, ‘Spectres Rising’ is a weekly team catch up over Zoom with a primary objective of keeping our players engaged with their teammates and coaching staff. Sessions are scheduled in place of mid-week practices, often featuring a theme of the week and delivering workouts that the players can work on at home.

This week, the Spectres U18.1 Girls were joined by Nunawading Basketball representative, WNBA star and Aussie Opal Bec Allen who jumped right in to share some stories of her journey and experience to date.

“Bec spoke with the team for about 40 minutes on Wednesday,” Head Coach Jaysn Harvey said.

“She spoke to them about her playing experiences and what it takes in terms of training, her pathway through Spectres and State teams to the AIS.”

“The girls were able to ask her questions, we’re so grateful to have a player and person of such high caliber like Bec who willingly gives up her time to help future superstars at her alma mater.”

Junior Spectres Director of Coaching Tamie Harvey has been thrilled with the level of engagement and ensuing results from the Spectres Rising initiative.

“Our Spectres teams continue to meet weekly on zoom and our wonderful coaching fraternity sharing their training sessions, drills and fun ideas has been sensational.”

“This pandemic has reinforced that we are a tight knit family and I couldn’t be prouder.”

As each day passes, we’re one day closer to returning to basketball – there’s a good chance that it may roll out a little differently to begin with but provided we hear the balls bouncing and the sneakers squeaking on the hardwood, we’ll take it however it comes.
