Nunawading Basketball is pleased to announce the appointment of Darren Bortolus as Head Coach of the Nunawading Spectres VBL Youth Women’s team for the 2027 season.
Bortolus joins the Spectres with extensive experience across Victorian representative basketball, state development pathways and elite junior programs, bringing a strong background in athlete development and a commitment to preparing young players for the next stage of their basketball careers.
His coaching experience includes roles with the Melbourne United Academy, Basketball Victoria’s National Performance Program and Victorian Metro State Teams, alongside time with both Diamond Valley and Kilsyth. His experience also extends to having coached with AUSA Hoops during recent tours of the United States.
The appointment follows a thorough recruitment process, with significant interest in a position that plays an important role within the Spectres’ broader women’s basketball pathway.
Nunawading Basketball General Manager – Representative, Brand & Commercial, Paul Flynn, said Bortolus stood out for both his coaching experience and his understanding of the responsibility involved in developing young athletes.
“Darren brings a really strong background in developing players across a number of different environments, but what impressed us most was his understanding that coaching goes well beyond the technical and tactical aspects of basketball,” Flynn said.
“He understands the importance of knowing athletes as people, building relationships and creating an environment where players are challenged, supported and held accountable.
“Those qualities are particularly important at Youth League level, where we’re working with athletes at different stages of their development, both on and off the court.”
Bortolus said he was honoured to be joining a program with such a strong history and connection to its community.
“Nunawading Basketball has a rich history going back decades and has a loyal local community following. I’m honoured to have the opportunity to coach the VBL Youth Women’s Spectres.
“It’s exciting to be involved in leading the current group of Spectres Youth Women while fostering a pathway for the next generation of Spectres juniors,” Bortolus said.
The VBL Youth Women’s program represents an important connection between Nunawading’s junior representative teams and its NBL1 South Women’s program, providing emerging athletes with opportunities to develop their game and prepare for senior basketball.
Bortolus will work alongside the Spectres’ NBL1 Women’s coaching staff, led by Head Coach Libby Schoenfeld, with a focus on strengthening that connection and creating greater alignment across the women’s pathway.
Flynn said the appointment reflected the program’s commitment to providing meaningful development opportunities for emerging female athletes.
“It’s an important stage in preparing athletes for the demands of senior basketball, and we want to make sure the environment reflects that responsibility,” Flynn said.
“Darren understands the balance between developing athletes for tomorrow and competing today. We want our players to be challenged, to take ownership of their development and to understand what it takes to progress to the next level.
“We’re really pleased to have him joining the Spectres and look forward to the contribution he’ll make across our women’s program.”
Bortolus takes over from Amy Quick, who has moved into the NBL1 South Women’s coaching staff as Lead Assistant Coach after previously leading the Youth Women’s team.
The Spectres are currently finalising preseason arrangements for the 2027 VBL Youth Women’s season, with further information regarding upcoming on-court sessions to be communicated shortly.
