About Nunawading Basketball

A Legacy of Excellence. A Pathway to the Future.

Welcome to Nunawading Basketball, home of the Melbourne East Basketball Association (M.E.B.A.) and the Nunawading Spectres, one of Australia’s most respected and successful basketball programs.

Each week, more than 13,000 players, coaches and officials take part in our competitions and development programs. From grassroots to elite performance, we create opportunities for every athlete to grow, compete and succeed, all within a community that lives and breathes basketball.

Grassroots Foundations

At the heart of our association is a thriving domestic competition, providing players of all ages and abilities with the opportunity to play, learn and love the game.
Through our beginner programs, school initiatives, and community partnerships, we’re committed to making basketball accessible while nurturing the next generation of talent.

New to the game? Start with a Beginner Program, or connect with your local M.E.B.A. Domestic Club to join a team next season.

The Nunawading Spectres – Australia’s Talent Factory

The Nunawading Spectres are the high-performance arm of the M.E.B.A., representing the very best of our domestic competitions at state and national levels.

Our program has long been regarded as a leader in player and coach development, producing more Australian Olympians, World Championship representatives, and professional athletes than any other association in the country.

Driven by innovation and a commitment to excellence, the Spectres environment is built on:

  • Advanced athlete development systems

  • Evidence-based coaching frameworks

  • A culture that balances performance with purpose

It’s a program that sets the standard for representative basketball in Australia – a true talent factory for the next generation of elite athletes.

Explore the history and impact of our program through the Nunawading Basketball Hall of Fame, where the names of those who’ve shaped Australian basketball are proudly celebrated.

Professional Performance

Nunawading has played a defining role in Australia’s basketball journey. A foundation member of the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1979, our legacy includes one of the most successful teams in WNBL history, claiming six national championships in seven years throughout the 1980s.

That legacy continues today through our elite NBL1 South men’s and women’s teams, who compete against the top programs from Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania, with national championships decided each year.

Home games at the Nunawading Basketball Centre, ‘The Graveyard’  are a genuine spectacle – capacity crowds, elite competition, and an atmosphere that connects our community to the heart of Australian basketball.

Proud Past. Progressive Future.

Across Australia, Nunawading Basketball is recognised as a benchmark for excellence – where community, performance, and innovation intersect.
Our aim is simple: to deliver the best basketball experience in the country, at every level of the game.

Whether you’re taking your first shot or chasing your professional dream – you belong at Nunawading Basketball.
