Nunawading Basketball is saddened to learn of the passing of long-time basketball contributor and coach, Mike Slusher.

Mike’s connection to the Nunawading Spectres dates back to 1986, when he joined the club as a player in the National Basketball League, having previously spent six seasons competing at the NBL level with St Kilda.

Following his playing career, Mike became a deeply respected figure within the Nunawading program, dedicating countless hours to the development of young athletes. He spent many years coaching within the Spectres junior representative program, primarily at the U16 and U18 levels, where he played an important role in shaping the growth of generations of players.

Beyond Nunawading, Mike enjoyed a long and respected coaching career across Big V and SEABL, and also contributed to the sport through involvement in Basketball Victoria High Performance programs.

An educator by profession, Mike brought the mindset and philosophy of a teacher into every team and program he led. His passion for learning, development and mentorship made a lasting impact on many players, coaches and colleagues throughout the Victorian basketball community.

Mike also remained closely connected to grassroots basketball through his involvement in MEBA domestic competitions, continuing to give back to the game he loved.

Across more than five decades of service to basketball, Mike’s contribution to the sport and to the development of young players leaves a significant legacy.

Our thoughts are with Mike’s family and close friends during this difficult time.

Mike will be remembered fondly by the Nunawading Basketball community.
