MELBOURNE – The Nunawading Spectres have signed CJ Asuncion-Byrd for the 2022 Cole Express NBL1 South season, the club confirmed today.
Asuncion-Byrd set the NBL1 South alight in last season as a member of the Ringwood Hawks, returning 22 points at 51.6% and 4.91 rebounds across 12 games. He has been a member of the Melbourne United extended squad up until joining his Spectres teammates recently.
“I’m excited to get going with the Nuna family,” Asuncion-Byrd said. “It’s a great group from staff to players on and off of the court who make it easy to focus on getting better every day and working towards the ultimate goal all teams are fighting for, a championship.”
“Speaking with Coach Cutler and hearing about the overall culture Nunawading has and prides themself on stood out to me. It’s an iron sharpens iron mentality, a close brotherhood and historic club filled with hoopers at all levels. I love everything Nunawading represents in the basketball community.”
“Preseason with the team has been great. Thankful that the guys were so welcoming. It’s a competitive atmosphere every single practice. You can feel everyone is mentally locked in from the start, focused on improving individually and collectively as the weeks progress.”
Spectres Head Coach Andrew Cutler equally excited about getting his new star guard onto the court and developing with his new teammates.
“We’re thrilled to welcome CJ to Nunawading.”
“CJ is a dynamic scorer who should bring plenty of excitement to The Graveyard in 2022!”
Asuncion-Byrd is an electrifying talent, on the fringe of getting an NBL look, that is sure to get Spectres fans off their seats this season. HE joins Dain Swetalla, Jack Gandolfo, Costas Hronopoulos and Jordan Geer as confirmed signings for Nunawading ahead of the Coles Express NBL1 South season tip-off.
The Spectres open their 2022 campaign at home, Saturday 23 April against northern suburbs rivals Eltham.
