STAGE 5—SQUADS/MID-WEEK TRAINING

On the completion of our Representative tryouts, all successful players will receive notification via a phone call, of squad  selection. Midweek training sessions will commence Tuesday 15th October following these calls.

Once squads have been announced, we will be running “In house” games. These games are instrumental  for our coaches to  run the squads in game scenarios and cement team positions.

The dates for these games and further information to follow for those successful in the tryout process.

*Please note that movement between teams can happen up until the end of grading Phase 1.

EXPECTATIONS

Tryouts are sometimes a very stressful time for players, parents and coaches. So here are a few tips  of what to expect during the process:

  • Nerves—this is completely natural as there are so many people all here for the same thing. Try to control your nerves and enjoy the experience.
  • Arrive Early, get your name ticked off, your tryout number noted on your leg and arm (make sure your jumper etc is off) and know what court you are scheduled to be on.
  • Be organised. Wear the correct appropriate gear and don’t forget a named basketball and drink bottle.
  • Feedback—listen to coaches and respond accordingly. Also follow the coaches instructions.
  • Having a good attitude is something coaches take seriously.
  • Let the coaches coach! We are aware some coaches may be friends however during tryouts, perceptions can be misleading. Please do not approach Coaches on or off the court during Tryouts. If you are wanting to chat to someone, our committee will be on hand to answer your questions.
  • Last but no least, let the players play. Leave them to concentrate and listen to instructions. Coaching from the sidelines just confuses them.

Have fun and try your hardest

We seek to be the most successful Junior Basketball program in Australia

Nunawading Spectres is a proud Club who currently have teams competing in the Under 12, 14, 16, and 18 Victorian Junior Basketball League, with games played on Friday nights. The Spectres program offers players the opportunity to compete in State and National Championship competitions, as well as Local and Interstate Tournaments throughout the season.  Grading matches are played for several weeks before the season officially commences.

Compulsory team training is held every Sunday morning for approx. 1.5hrs and also an additional training session is held one night mid-week for approx. 1 hr. Times and venues are available after teams are finalised.

What being a Rep player really means:

Domestic Responsibilities:  As Nunawading Junior Spectres is a representative team of the Melbourne East Basketball Association (MEBA), it is expected that to be eligible for selection to a Nunawading Junior Spectres Representative team, all Nunawading Junior Spectres players will need to register for a MEBA Junior or Senior Domestic Team (midweek or Saturday) as soon as is practical following selection to a Nunawading Junior Spectres Representative team. Appropriate time is given to new players to register for a MEBA team.

Approximate cost involved in playing at an Elite level:

Uniforms:  All of our players certainly take pride in wearing their uniforms and these uniforms are compulsory for all players when they attend any Spectres trainings, games or Tournaments. Any time you are representing the club, you are to be in full, correct uniform.  A full uniform that consists of training uniform, playing uniform, warm-up top and hoodie, is approx. $300

Registration fees: All players are required to pay registration fees. These are to be paid on the dates set (TBC) and players are at risk of not taking to the crt if the fees have not been paid by the due dates. The cost for the 2019/20 season will be confirmed shortly. The season runs approx. from October – September (depending on finals qualifications etc).

Team Sheet Fees:  You will also be required to pay for team sheet fees during the season. These are normally collected from the parents by the Team Manager on a regular basis over the duration of the season. The weekly cost of the Team Sheet can be between $55—$70 (cost set by Venues).

Parents Duties:  All parents are expected to score at Friday night matches during the season on a rostered basis. Parents are also required to help out with their allocated duty over our June Tournament. Approx. 3-4 hrs is required from each family.

General Information:

During the year, Nunawading Spectres teams are entered in various Tournaments. Our program requires that teams must enter at least TWO compulsory tournaments for the season, these being,

January Tournament – Australia Day weekend (24th (pm) – 27th Jan).

June Tournament – Queens Birthday weekend (6th-8th June). Team entry is covered by the club

Whilst representative basketball requires a large commitment by players and parents alike, it also offers many rewards. Many strong friendships have been forged during the years at Nunawading.

This is just a brief indication of the commitment involved. More detailed information can be found in our Player and Parent Handbook which will be issued to every family at the first Tryout session on October 5th and will be available online from early October.
